Brief

The clients live in a home with superb original stonework. However, they wanted a lighter, brighter ground floor living space, with better views of their garden.

 Solution

This project posed the question: how do you flood an existing stone structure with light while maintaining as much of the original stonework as possible? The obvious solution would have been to knock the end out, but this would have rendered the interior tunnel-like and obliterated much of the nice stone detailing. Instead, Stephen Ball confined stone demolitions to between two existing doorways, meaning the majority of the hand-tooled stone door surrounds could be retained. The drama of the glazed corner is further enhanced by a frameless glass-to-glass window and an offset supporting steel column.
